Below, we’ve answered some popular questions our customers ask. If you have more questions or would like further explanations for any of those listed below, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

What Is Your Design and Material Selection Process?
When planning both design and material selection, keeping a budget in mind is crucial. Often, individuals are uncertain about their budget, leading to designs based purely on their wish list. This can be disheartening when final selections and pricing reveal costs far exceeding what they are willing to pay. We start with an initial design and budget analysis based on the space’s dimensions. This allows STL Design and Build to identify key priorities and propose cost-saving alternatives. At this stage, a Retainer is requested before proceeding with design adjustments and material selection. Most product choices must be made before we can start the building process, and we’ll advise you throughout the process to ensure we complete it to your satisfaction. We guide you step by step through the process, including selecting wall tiles, flooring, countertop materials, cabinet colors, appliances, and plumbing fixtures.
Can I Supply My Own Materials for My Project?
Yes and no. Some products, such as pendant lights or faucets, can be easily supplied by the customer and installed by STL Design and Build. However, we always remind our customers that if they supply their own faucet and the cartridge is faulty or the light fixture has a defect that needs replacement after installation, they will incur additional labor charges. The expenses of these issues would be covered by our company if we supplied the products. We never undertake installations where all products are customer-supplied. As the installer, we are responsible for any damage during installation. However, our primary business model is to act as both the supplier and the installer to ensure we complete projects with the highest possible work and material quality while staying accountable.
Can I Begin My Renovation on My Own?
You’re welcome to embark on your renovation project yourself, but we advise caution and awareness of your limitations. Many people attempt their own tear-outs, but it’s important to remember that it’s not just about removing carpet. Every staple embedded in the floor must also be removed. Tile removal is similarly meticulous; the subfloor must be entirely cleared of debris, and old vinyl layers glued to the floor must be thoroughly scraped clean. Painting is another cost-saving measure, but bear in mind that a professional painter handles tasks like filling holes in baseboards and door/window casings. As a DIY painter, these responsibilities fall on you, requiring time, patience, and attention to detail. Ultimately, thorough preparation and proper execution are crucial to achieving the best results in your renovation efforts.
Why Should I Hire a Professional?
Many reasons should compel you to invest in a professional contractor for any home project, from a kitchen or bathroom renovation to new siding. First starters, the team at STL Design and Build has years of versatile experience handling various types of projects. Our home remodeling contractors have ample training and expertise in all aspects of home exterior and interior improvement and enhancement jobs. Furthermore, doing your project yourself or putting it in the hands of non-professionals can put you at risk of liabilities from injuries and property damage. We carry the appropriate coverage to protect our team and your investment. You also get assurance of professional work quality and a timely process. We’ll gladly speak with you about your project if you need more reasons to entrust us with your home’s beauty, comfort, and value.
Does Your Company Carry Workers’ Compensation Insurance and General Liability?
STL Design and Build’s answer to this question is a resounding yes, and we cover all our subcontractors. We understand how vital this coverage is to protect our team and your home renovation or remodeling investment.
How Much Time Does the Installation Process Take?
The duration of a project largely depends on its complexity. There is a precise order of operations to follow: starting from demolition, proceeding to electrical and plumbing work, followed by inspections, and then moving on to drywall, flooring, cabinet installation, and countertop templating. Following this, several weeks are spent on installing hardware, crown molding, wall tiles, and other finishing materials. A kitchen project typically takes 8-10 weeks, but this can be extended if wall removal or HVAC relocation is necessary. A master bathroom often follows a similar timeline (6-10 weeks), mainly because the detailed tile work can take 1-2 weeks on its own. Additionally, bathrooms are smaller spaces, making it difficult to schedule multiple trades simultaneously without them getting in each other’s way.
Will I Need to Apply for Permits for My Project?
We assure you that you won’t need to apply for any permits for your home renovation or remodeling project. While this measure might be in a homeowner’s hands for DIY projects or those with other building professionals, STL Design and Build takes this worry off your plate. Our contractors get the permits for all jobs unless the appropriate officials don’t require them because of the scope of the work. Our goal is to make the process as easy as possible for you, including taking care of permits and reducing how much our work affects your daily life.
How Are Remodeling and Renovation Different?
Remodeling involves altering a space’s structure, layout, or function, which can include tasks like moving walls, plumbing, or electrical systems. In contrast, renovating refers to addressing a space with updates and restoration services without changing its fundamental layout. For instance, remodeling a kitchen might require significant changes like repositioning walls and rerouting electrical wiring. Renovation, however, may only involve cosmetic updates, such as repainting, replacing cabinets, or updating countertops and appliances. Both processes aim to improve the space, but remodeling tends to be more extensive and complex than renovating. Understanding these differences can help you choose the right approach for your project.
Do We Provide Insurance Restoration Services?
Yes, STL Design and Build offers comprehensive insurance restoration services to assist homeowners in repairing and restoring properties affected by unforeseen damage, including storms, fire, and water-related incidents. Our experienced team works directly with your insurance provider to ensure a smooth, efficient restoration process that meets both your needs and your policy requirements.
