Should You Get Windows Replaced All at Once or One at a Time

Window replacement is unique among other types of home improvements in that one can choose to have all windows replaced a few at a time or all at once. Today, we discuss the pros and cons of each option.

The Upfront Cost

Replacing a few windows will, of course, cost less than a whole-house window replacement. However, if you are planning on gradually replacing your windows over the years, the costs can add up – you’ll spend less on labor costs alone if you have your windows replaced in one project. Ask your contractor about financing options if paying for the window replacement cost upfront is not an option.

Energy Efficiency

One of the reasons why windows need to be replaced is because they could be affecting the house’s energy efficiency. Old windows may be leaking heat through the glass and/or gaps in the frame during the winter season, which causes drafts and increases the house’s heating requirements. This can result in higher heating bills due to the increased workload on the HVAC system. During the cooling season, inefficient windows can have the same effect on the air conditioning system.

If you are considering replacing your windows a few at a time, try to do it all in one room. For example, you can replace all your kitchen windows during a kitchen renovation project. Rooms with a mini-split heat pump and air conditioner can immediately benefit from the new windows. However, if your home is equipped with a ducted whole-home system, you might not see improvements in your utility bills unless all windows in your home are replaced first.

Aesthetic Consistency

When you’re having your windows replaced one at a time, you’re banking on a certain manufacturer selling the exact same window style and color over the years. This means you’ll need to choose an “evergreen” design and color palette, which may limit your options, or work with a custom window manufacturer, which can significantly inflate your budget. Also, small differences in profile and frame thickness can be noticeable from the curb. Replacing your windows all at once, on the other hand, can ensure aesthetic consistency.
