Is Condensation in Windows Normal?

You’ll want your windows to last as long as possible, and this means checking them periodically for signs of a developing issue. At one point, you may notice that your windows are “sweating” or fogging up. But is this actually normal or a serious problem?

Yes, Window Condensation Is Normal

Condensation is what happens when moisture in the air builds up on a surface as water droplets. When there’s a notable difference between the temperature inside and outside your home, condensation may form on your windows, fogging up the glass and hampering a clear view of the outdoors. But no worries – this is normal. You can either wipe down the surface of the window to keep the glass clear or just let the condensation evaporate on its own.

But Sometimes, It’s Not

There are instances, however, where condensation on the windows actually indicates an underlying problem. You’ll know because the “sweat” has formed between the window panes instead of the surface. The space between the panes usually contains an inert gas that helps prevent outdoor temperatures from transferring into your home. When condensation has filled that in-between space, it can only mean that the seal of the window has already failed. This leads to poor window thermal performance, which in turn, results in higher energy bills.

Preventing Condensation in Windows

Here’s some good news: there are simple ways to prevent – or at least reduce – condensation in your windows. You can run a dehumidifier or just increase natural ventilation in your home. But the easiest way is to have it replaced with newer and better ones, especially if the condensation in your existing windows has already led to moisture damage. A trusted home remodeling company like  STL Design and Build can help you with this.

Our Smart 365 replacement windows are designed for superior durability and thermal performance. With special foam insulation plus an advanced spacer system with krypton glass, our options keep an airtight seal that prevents significant energy loss. Our windows’ rigid design and construction means you longer have to worry as much about condensation forming between their panes.
