A Brief Guide to Common Window Styles

Although all windows let in light and give some ventilation, they can also be used for a variety of other purposes. Some types of windows are easy to open while others are wonderful for airflow and wide views. Depending on the architectural design or ornamental style of a structure, various windows might have extremely diverse looks. Identifying the existing window kinds is the first step in narrowing down the many alternatives for windows.

Casement Windows

Casement windows normally pivot from side hinges and swing and open outwards. To give enough light that is not obstructed by muntin bars or other construction, many casements have fairly large glass panes. In comparison to other window styles, casements often have a larger open area for ventilation. Casement windows can provide a very efficient seal for better energy efficiency when closed and locked. These types of windows should not open onto traffic lanes (or areas where people pass through frequently) since they can pose safety hazards to passersby. It is worthy to note that casement windows are also one of the most preferred windows in North American homes.

Slider Windows

Slider windows open horizontally as the name implies. They can provide clear views and abundant ventilation, but they are not as tightly sealed as casement windows. Because of their huge openings and ease of operation, sliders are typically utilized for egress windows in basement or below-grade bedrooms. Sliders are also common at the tops of basement walls’ utility windows, so they’re frequently used by home remodeling contractors as well.

Bay Windows

One of the best-looking and classiest window types on the market, architects can use bay windows to generate angles and projections on a building’s structure. The majority of bay windows have side windows that may be opened for airflow and allow light to enter at various angles. The spacious sill of the window can be utilized for plants or a window seat, and bays are commonly used in kitchens and family areas.
