Continuity
It may sound counterintuitive, but a well-designed deck is something that you don’t immediately notice upon seeing the house; it should look as if it’s part of the main structure. When planning your deck design, look for design cues that evoke continuity, such as material, color and ornamentation. You can, for example, paint the deck with the same color palette as the house. Design elements around the house can inform your choice of deck railing.
Foot Traffic
Outdoor decks can help control the foot traffic in and through your property. You can design the deck with your deck builder so it directs foot traffic to where you want it or, in some cases, where you don’t want it. If there’s a part of your property that allows for a great view, you’ll want to place a viewing platform there and a path that leads to it. You might also want to divert foot traffic away from walls where there are out-swinging windows or areas where anyone might trample on plants.

Therefore, your deck design should incorporate things that let you enjoy your outdoor space to the fullest. For example, if you love having a barbecue every weekend, your deck should have an outdoor kitchen, complete with a grill and refrigerator.

Your deck needs strong framing to carry all the furniture and people on it. Invest in quality materials that will hold up for years – they may cost more, but considering the work you’ll put in designing them, it only makes sense for them to keep their shape during their service life.
